A car bomb that exploded outside Besiktas’ stadium two hours after their match against Bursaspor on Saturday has killed 38 people were killed and another 155 wounded, Turkey’s interior minister Suleyman Soylu has confirmed.
Images and TV footage showed what appeared to be the burnt-out shell of a car near the Vodafone Arena, with Soylu indicating that it had targeted a riot police bus. Most of the casualties are believed to be police.
Deputy prime minister Numan Kurtulmus confirmed one of the attacks had been the explosion of a car bomb while the second was the act of a suicide bomber.
At a media conference on Sunday, Soylu announced that 30 police officers, seven civilians and one as of yet unidentified person had been killed in the explosions.
The Turkish Football Federation condemned the attacks, while Bursaspor confirmed their supporters had exited the stadium close to the scene of the attack before the explosion.
